Lights! Camera! Music!
Film has always been a passion for Durán. As a child her grandmother took her to the local cinema in Oakland, California, which was a time when access to Mexican cinema was restricted. Movie going with 'Tita' was always a high point for Elena, with all the fascinating films and wonderful music. Elena watched the name 'Manuel Esperón' scroll up the screen, never realising that Manuel and his wife would become huge supporters of her work with Manuel and Beatriz participating significantly in Amorcito Corazón.
Esperón is known as a maestro for his music in more than five hundred films from the Epoca de Or del Ciné Mexicano. He was a pianist, conductor, composer, arranger but he did not write the lyrics – only the music.
This was the spark of inspiration for Amorcito Corazón - to focus on the instrumental. Durán worked alongside Luis Zepeda to follow the instrumental and classical context of Manuel Esperón's Mexican cinema scores, refocusing them as instrumental gems. In doing so, Durán highlights and honours the talented Manuel Esperón's magical compositional style.
Other non-librettist composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Henry Mancini and Andrew Lloyd Webber have benefitted from such 'refocusing', allowing a much wider audience to recognise and appreciate their musical works. Now, the magic of one of Mexico's greatest composers comes to Belfast.
