The Guinness Folk and Jazz Club was born in 1972 and for six years continued to provide an eclectic mix of performances for lovers of both music forms. In 1978 the Harp Folk Club was established in the atmospheric, but bitterly cold, surroundings of the then derelict Old Library and went on to host almost 500 separate performances before it’s long-term home in the Senior Common Room was closed in 2004.
Tonight’s guests will all be very familiar to the many hundreds of our friends who returned to the Club year after year and we look forward to welcoming many of you back tonight. The acclaimed Galway singer Sean Keane makes a welcome return to Belfast, after a break of several years, in the company of Fergus Feely (mandolin & vocals) and Pat Coyne (guitar & vocals). There’ll be stunning fiddle and guitar tunes from Cork’s own Nollaig Casey and Omagh’s genius of the frets Arty McGlynn - while Ulster’s finest traditional singer Len Graham joins us from County Armagh.
It’s a family affair as brother and sister Frank and Jane Cassidy, who featured on the TV series As I Roved Out in the late 70’s, return to the stage to revive old favourites and explore new songs. And the family connection continues as Jane’s husband, singer, song collector and author Maurice Leyden is joined on keyboards and backing vocals by their daughter Anna. Another very talented Belfast artist, singer and songwriter Gerry Creen, is still going strong after 30 years as is Rousli - featuring Paul Evans, Hugh Fearon and Norman Coates - whose blend of self penned songs, ragtime rhythms, humour and the odd Irish ballad were in great demand in folk clubs during the eighties.
Compere for the evening, and singing a song or two himself, will be the acclaimed Co. Down singer, songwriter and broadcaster Colum Sands.
